Many people might not even be aware of the motorised valve controlling your hot water until the day there is no hot water! When the 2 or 3 motorised port valve fails, it can mean that there is no hot water, either to your taps and shower or to the radiators, and sometimes both.
Below we explain how the valves work and why they may cause you to be without hot water when they fail.
What are Motorised Valves?
3-port and 2-port valves are often motorised. It is an automatic process for the central heating system to divert the hot water from the boiler to the hot water cylinder or the central heating (radiators).
How do 2-port & 3-port valves work?
The motorised valves have an internal motor that pulls an internal mechanism to open/close a port.
3-port motorised valves
The three-port valve looks similar to a standard tee, but it has a metal box that houses the motor. The 'T' shape gives it the 3-ports; one for water coming from the boiler, one for water to the hot water tank, and one to the central heating or radiators.
When the valve has no power, it will to blocking port A as the spring is pulling it to that side. When the motor is powered, it pulls the ball from port A to the other side blocking port B. There is also a third state, where it will be positioned in the middle to allow water to flow through port A & B simultaneously.
2-port motorised valves
The two-port valve is similar to a three-port. But whereas a 3-port looks like a tee, a two-port looks like a coupler or isolating valve. And the valve controls whether the water flows through or not. With 2-port valves, it is most common to need two of them in an S-plan system.
